Albert Schnyder's oeuvre consists of a single piece and mainly includes subjects such as the Jura landscape, interiors, portraits of ordinary people and still lifes. The style is clear, solid and taut: an apparent simplicity that earned the painter many imitators. His imitators forgot the humanity and affective depth of the work, which is not based on observation alone. Schnyder wanted to give his works an eternal value and said: "You will never be able to say of my paintings: 'This is Muriaux in September, between eight and nine in the morning'. I look for the permanent, the enduring. I detest everything that is fleeting. I have to live the drama of my model, I have to express its fourth dimension."
