In the 1930s, without making a radical break, he moved towards surreal pictorial concepts and increasingly favoured motifs from the circus world, Basel's carnival culture and the local tradition of dancing to death. His visual humour became increasingly cryptic (Spring Day in Basel, 1936). In the 1950s he tended towards highly simplified graphic compositions. Hindenlang regularly transferred his experience of the laws of glass painting, which had been cultivated with increasing intensity since the 1930s, into his easel and wall paintings. Colour and form are of equal value and are understood as superior to the content.
