He found the motifs for his landscape and railway station paintings mainly in the Basel region. He also sketched and watercoloured tirelessly in nearby Alsace and Jura, and then painted the pictures in oil in his studio. He also found numerous motifs in the Swiss mountains, especially in recent decades. In addition, portraits from commissions, representations of his family, acquaintances and self-portraits form an important part of his work. They bear witness to his affection for people and his mastery of capturing not merely the outward appearance but the essence and individuality of the person. His still lifes show simple, even inconspicuous everyday objects. With delicate colouring he succeeded in expressing the beauty and vitality of simple things.

Stylistically he belongs to the 'tonal Basel school', but he was also inspired by Impressionism. He was able to create a quiet harmony and balance in his paintings, often with very impasto application of paint and contouring of forms. True to his style throughout his life, he occupies an unmistakable place in the panorama of Basel painters.
