The painted work began in the late 1950s with the overcoming of Informel. Müller was fascinated by the jointless and mortarless masonry of the house he had bought in the Ardèche, consisting of massive stone blocks piled on top of each other, which he was busy restoring in those years. He painted vertical formats of a strong, deep colourfulness; the oil colours are applied impasto and with a palette knife, the simply structured picture field is determined by a few colour fields that relate to each other. Although Müller sought precisely structured composition, he never really abandoned the formal repertoire of his early years. The purely pictorial notations in Informel are transformed into carriers of meaning. It was the slow movements of intertwined bodies that occupied the painter from then on. Bruno Müller painted erotic encounters as body architectures, based on pornographic depictions. Important subjects of the 1970s are knots and finger play. Over the years, individual paintings were used as models for new pictorial solutions. The painted oeuvre is narrow and concentrated on a few themes.
