As a self-taught artist, Madja Ruperti began painting in oil and watercolour in 1945. A particular focus of her work was the graphic element in the landscapes she depicted. At this time, her painting quickly developed towards abstraction and incorporated various styles, such as surrealism and cubism. From 1958 onwards, she turned to non-representational painting and worked in oil, gouache, tempera, fabric and paper collages, and serigraphs. Until 1963, she continued to use orthogonal forms applied with a palette knife. In the collages, viewers encounter a decorative composition of irregular surface shapes that have been placed in spatial and floating relationships with one another.
