Also in the post-war years, Stettler began to work on a type of picture that became a hallmark of his mature work: large-format portraits painted in full or half figure against an empty background. Especially when several individuals form groups, it becomes clear in the empty spaces in between how little there is to connect them and how each individual sees the world with his or her own eyes. Without external motives, the people in Stettler's pictures are simply there, witnesses of the moment and manifestations of their own presence.
