Ernest Albert Bolens began his artistic career with an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in Aarau while being Eugen Steimers student. This was followed by years of training at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Karlsruhe, the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich and the Académie Julien in Paris. Influenced by Ferdinand Hodler, Cuno Amiet, and Paul Cézanne, Bolens painted oil paintings and watercolour drawings. In addition to Leimental landscapes, the artist made still-lifes, portraits, self-portraits, and depictions of hunting scenarios.
