Plattner took the motifs for his paintings primarily from local history. He became known for his historicist murals in Liestal at the Oberen Tor, in the atrium of the Basel town hall and in Laufen at the Basler Tor. Plattner also designed several façade decorations on properties in Basel and the ceiling frieze in Reichenstein Castle in Arlesheim.

Plattner's work is very broad. On the easel he painted portraits, genre paintings, landscapes and also glass paintings. He became popular, however, with book illustrations and commercial graphics, political propaganda and advertising posters, brochures and coats of arms. He designed posters and painted lanterns for the Basel carnival.
