Bauer's works plunge their subjects into a twilight zone that casts doubt on the very reality of perception. Exploring the limits of memory and its disintegration, the artist traces, blurs and erases his drawings, sometimes to the point of rendering them unrecognisable. In rewriting the images, he exhumes fragments of the past – in which he still senses something perverted – and projects them into a troubled present.

The images filtered and recomposed by the artist are part of narrative ensembles whose arrangement fluctuates. Personal memories mingle with documents, and their apprehension shifts, like a fleeting impression. And while history and memory are constantly invoked, they can never be interpreted in terms of an indisputable truth, since for Marc Bauer, reality is nothing more than a shifting mental construct.
