Dick's work is characterised by his close association with his painter friends in Basel, who together wanted to break away from the Böcklin tradition. The shift from idealised, mythological and historical painting to a realistic, direct interpretation of motifs was intended to bring Basel into line with European art. This group of artists, known as the ‘Dunkeltonige’ (dark tones) and ultimately as Basel's classical generation of painters, may seem conventional compared to the Parisian avant-garde, but for Basel their work was nothing short of revolutionary. Influenced by Gustave Courbet, Edouard Manet, the Impressionists, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne, Dick found his artistic goal. Nevertheless, he was the most conservative among his fellow painters.
