Jean Jacques Lüscher's early work is mainly characterised by figurative representations and portraits of people. A representative example is the painting 'Drumming Orphanage Boys' (1911). Later he painted still lifes and portraits of people making music, and finally mainly landscape motifs.

In the early Paris period Lüscher, influenced by the Impressionists, painted in light colours. Later, dark, rich colours and high-contrast compositions became characteristic of his style.
