In his work, Mahrer deals intensively with people and their fates and abysses, as well as with plants, reflections and architecture. His pictures resemble inner landscapes in which different times, places and people meet in different perspectives. The pictures of his early work are dark-toned and heavy. His oil paintings are characterised by a thick application of paint. The application of paint became visibly lighter, lighter and more fluid. Throughout his life, Mahrer's concern was to transform the tough, heavy matter of oil paint into a watercolour-like lightness. He also worked with watercolours and ink and devoted himself to drawing.
