As a painter, he belongs to the generation of the dark-toned. His preference for overcast, rainy landscapes (Regenstimmung am Bielersee, 1908, Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel, Kunstmuseum), for austere portraits (Selbstbildnis, 1918, Kunstmuseum Bern) and light-dramatic interior studies (Am Tisch, 1919, Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel, Kunstmuseum) corresponds to his colour scale, which is predominantly graded in shades of grey and green. Roos works in clearly separated spatial layers, prefers two-dimensional compositions, spatulas or applies the paint in thick layers (Landschaft am Bielersee, 1915). In the 1930s he tried out a much lighter and thinner application of paint on landscape motifs from the area around Riehen.
